What is ETIAS?

The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) is a pre-travel screening requirement for nationals of visa-exempt countries who wish to visit any of the 30 Schengen Area member states, including France, Spain, Italy, Germany, and the Netherlands.

ETIAS is not a visa. It is an automated electronic authorisation linked to your passport that must be obtained before you board a flight, train, or ferry to the Schengen Area. It does not guarantee entry — border authorities retain the right to refuse admission on arrival.

Once approved, your ETIAS is valid for multiple trips across all participating Schengen countries over a three-year period, or until your passport expires — whichever is sooner.

Who needs an ETIAS?

ETIAS is required for nationals of countries that currently enjoy visa-free access to the Schengen Area. This includes citizens of the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and many others.

Nationals who already require a Schengen visa are not eligible for ETIAS — they must continue to apply for the appropriate visa. EU and EEA citizens do not need an ETIAS to travel within the Schengen Area.

Unsure whether you need one? Visit ETA Permits and click Your Journey Begins Here — you can verify your eligibility instantly on the application page.

Important: ETIAS covers travel to all Schengen Area member states under a single authorisation. You do not need a separate ETIAS for each country you plan to visit within the Schengen Zone.

Frequently asked questions

Which countries are covered by ETIAS?
ETIAS covers all 30 Schengen Area member states, including France, Spain, Germany, Italy, Portugal, the Netherlands, Greece, Austria, Switzerland, and many more. A single ETIAS authorisation is valid for travel across all participating countries.
Do British citizens need an ETIAS?
Yes. Following the United Kingdom's departure from the European Union, British citizens travelling to Schengen Area countries for tourism, business, or transit are required to hold a valid ETIAS authorisation before departure.
How long can I stay in the Schengen Area on an ETIAS?
An ETIAS permits stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen Area. Your ETIAS remains valid for three years, allowing multiple trips within that window as long as you respect the 90-day limit.
Can I work or study in Europe on an ETIAS?
No. ETIAS is for short-stay tourism, business visits, and transit only. It does not permit employment or study. If you intend to work or study in a Schengen country, you will need to apply for the appropriate national visa.
Do I need an ETIAS if I am transiting through a Schengen airport?
In most cases, yes. Even if you are transiting through a Schengen Area airport without leaving the international zone, an ETIAS is generally required. Some nationalities may be exempt — check the full details at ETA Permits.
What if my ETIAS application is refused?
If your ETIAS is refused, you will need to apply for a Schengen visa through the embassy or consulate of your destination country. ETA Permits reviews every application before submission to minimise the risk of refusal.
